One of our GB Deaf Swimming swimmers, Tom Baxter, has won Apprentice of the Year 2012 in the Disability Swimming category at the AASE ceremony on 13th May 2012!
AASE (The Advanced Award in Sporting Excellence) is a Level 3 NVQ award given by a Sports Governing Body which is run alongside 6th form studies but by each sport’s Governing Body.  It is a 2-year modular programme which covers aspects of the chosen sport (technical, practical, nutrition, media, finance, to name some of the elements) and access to it is limited to those the ASA (in this case) choose, having met certain performance standards in their swimming by the end of Year 11.  In Tom’s peer group there were less than 150 students across swimming, disability swimming, synchronised swimming and diving.  Tom was the first deaf swimmer to be accepted onto the apprenticeship: he encouraged Alexander Cranford to enrol the following year and has talked to Luke Nisted about seeing if he can be accepted this autumn.  I attach a link to the British Swimming website’s factsheet about the AASE course. Many congratulations to Tom!
