 12th European Championships, Lublin, Poland 2-7 July 2018
While this was not our most successful event in terms of medals our very young GB squad did fantastically well throughout the whole competition setting no less than 82 personal bests and had 34 appearances in finals. Senior swimmer Jack McComish was the teams sole medal winner with 3 bronze in the 50 Free, 50 Breast & 100 Breast however there were also some excellent record swims from the team. Nathan Young broke 4 GB records in the 50 & 100 Butterfly (twice for each) and Oliver Kenny set a new GB record in the 100 Backstroke adding an English record in the 200I.M. Libby Gotta (13) also grabbed an English record in the 200 Backstroke while setting 11 age group records in her first major competition in 50/100/200 Backstroke, 100 Butterfly & 200/400 I.M. Letisha Ellis (13) & Lucy Jordan-Caws (15) also competing for the first time at this level notched up 3 & 5 age group records respectively. Letisha set new records in 50/100/200 Breaststroke which are also I.O.M. records, while Lucy's records came in the 400 I.M. 50/100 & 200 Fly with her 200 time also being a Scottish record. Shiona McClafferty (18) also grabbed a Scottish record in the 100 Breaststroke. The relay teams just missed out on medals finishing 4th or 5th every time however the men's 4 x100 freestyle relay of Nathan Young, Oliver Kenny, Kieran Holdbrook & Jack McComish as well as the 4 x 200 team which saw Luke Nisted instead of Oliver set new GB records.  What a time it’s been for Alice Kinsey (11), going from the highs of qualifying for Devon counties, 5 GB deaf cat A championship wins and numerous PB’s. Then, in May last year life took a complete tumble, literally. Alice already has an asymmetrical profound loss, within the space of a couple of weeks Alice was unable to walk unaided. Constant swaying sensation and head pressure. Weeks turned into months with no improvement. Alice already new most of the local hospital medics and audiologists after first discovering her hearing loss 6 years previously, the last year has been spent getting to know the other half! The journey is never short of quick as most will relate too. However, after finding an amazing paediatric audio vestibular Consultant and diagnosed with Vestibular Migraines. Alice is back on track. Alice had to deal with medication changes, weekly physiotherapy and lots of medical investigations. She also missed a lot of school.
Alice is now walking and running normally, back to school, building back up to her normal swim training programme. This culminated in her first attempt at the 800 free clinching the bronze at the Devon development gala, posting a new GB deaf record of 12.42:03. Even with the most trying of times, with perseverance and passion we can all push through and triumph. Looking to more success in the future and getting back to training with GB deaf squad.  Congratulations to our senior female member of the club Sarah Sharrock who continues to improve her times & recently won 4 silver medals in Newcastle on 1 July
